If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

I wrote my first book when I was fourteen and I still have it. It’s a historical romance written in long-hand in multi-colored felt-tip pens. It was inspired by The Wolf and the Dove by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss. Back then, I thought I could conquer the world. But the feeling faded fast.
And that is what I would want to say to my younger self. The self-belief I started out with wasn’t misplaced. I am a good writer. I can always improve, but I have a talent and people enjoy my books.
It’s a wonderful feeling.

How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?

Well, first of all, my writing became a process. Prior to publication it was more hit and miss. I was powering through at my own pace, with no real restraints.
After I became a published author, the most important thing was that I was more focused on rewriting and drafting. Suddenly, you know that a number of other pairs of eyes will scrutinize your story. It certainly makes you more organized.
My publishing contract brought with it a series of dates and deadlines, most of them not set by me.  That, for me, was the biggest difference.

What was the best money you ever spent as a writer?

I’m very cautious about what I spend as a writer. I think it would be easy to fall into the trap of buying some of the packages that promise increased book sales.
Promotion is important to all authors and I’m so glad I found Nas Dean. She is more than a promoter. Nas works incredibly hard for all her authors and provides excellent value for money. Her services are the best money I’ve spent on my writing.

What authors did you dislike at first but grew into?

I struggled to like Louis de Bernières books, not because they aren’t brilliant. He’s one of the best writers I’ve ever come across, but his ability to entertain and shock in equal measures disturbs me. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve closed one of his books and been determined never to read anything of his again, but I always go back. That, I think, is the sign of a genius.

Tell us a bit about your book...

Colton’s Secret Bodyguard is Book Four in the Coltons of Roaring Springs continuity.

  1. That is great advice to your first time writer self and good to know what it's like as a published author.

The story sounds good. I've been in a suspense and mystery mood lately.

  3. I've always liked the name, Rylan for a hero. This sounds really good.

  4. Hi, thanks for the congratulations and comments!
I've always liked the name Rylan and it was perfect for this hero, who is strong and reserved. I still struggle with names. I want them to fit the personality of the character and spend a long time getting it right. It gets harder as I write more books because I've used all my favorites! If you have any suggestions, they'd be very welcome!

  7. That's cool that you wrote your first book at 14 and still have it. I wrote mine at age 10 and I still have it. I like to show it to the kids when I do author visits. They are always amazed!

  8. Thank you! I'm so glad I kept the book I wrote when I was 14. I have pictures of it on my website: https://janegodmanauthor.com/about-jane/ My grandchildren are still too young to appreciate it, but I'll share it with them when they're older as an example of how to go for your dreams!

  12. Louis de Bernieres is such a tricky one, isn't he, Stephanie? He writes such amazing stories and then, just when we are lulled into thinking everything is okay, we're launched into a horrible situation. He's a genius, but I'm fearful whenever I pick up one of his books.
Thanks again for the lovely messages of congratulations and best wishes, everyone. This has been a tough year, and seeing this book on the shelves is such a highlight :)
