1.     If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be? 

Start younger! This is something I wished I’d done. I have so many stories to tell and so little time!

2.     How did publishing your first book change your process of writing? 

My first book was published by Escape Publishing (a digital arm of Harlequin now Harper Collins). The editing process was a real eye opener and taught me to writer tighter and pacier (something I still struggle with by the way!).

3.     What was the best money you ever spent as a writer? 

I’d like to say two things here: 1. Going to my first romance writers conference; and 2. Writing workshops. Writing workshops are a fantastic way of learning the craft and meeting like-minded people. I met one of my best friends through an on-line workshop several years ago. We were both amazed to discover we lived only 16 kms away from each other. We caught up over coffee and discovered we had a lot in common. We’re still friends and together we run a local face-to-face writing group that meets once a month. The conference I attended, was run by the Romance Writers of Australia and over the course of three days I met so many lovely people and felt like I’d found my tribe.Conferences are fabulous ways to meet people, network and also have the opportunity to pitch your work to agents and publishers.

4.     What authors did you dislike at first but grew into? 

I can’t really think of any to be honest. I do however, have a tendency to binge read a certain author then I’ll need a rest / break from them for several months. Sometimes longer. Eventually I’ll go back to that author but its really more about the genre I may get tired of as I read across several.

5.     Tell us a bit about your book... 

I’ve posted previously about the hero and heroine of my latest romance/women’s fiction, Take Me Home, so for this site I’d like to share some details about the community of quirky characters that populate my book and also the fictional town of Bindarra Creek.  In my story, several major characters of my previous books in this series (Bindarra Creek Makeover and Love’s Sweet Challenge) also re-appear showing readers how their lives have progressed since their own story. I have also included the members of the local Country Women’s Association, who are a force to be reckoned with and who I love writing about. In particular, Edwina Lette, a 72 year old town matriarch with a heart condition, the gift of second-sight and who has a mischievous personality. Her best friend, Pamela Brown, also appears again and I reveal a little about her past and give a glimpse of a happier future for her. My book, Take Me Home, is the first book in a group writing venture series (Bindarra Creek A Town Reborn) I organised comprising of nine members including myself. Each story although it focuses on that member’s main characters, also includes other characters living in the town. I love how this gives continuity to the series and I hope readers will also enjoy meeting old friends again.

Suzanne Gilchrist lives in the Hunter Valley, Australia with her family and pets and is the author of over twenty books, several of which have finalled in writing contests. As S. E. Gilchrist, she writes science fiction, ancient historical, apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic romances and romantic suspense. As Suzanne Gilchrist, she writes women’s fiction and contemporary small-town romances, often with a splash of suspense.

Suzanne takes a keen interest in the environment and animal welfare and loves bushwalking and kayaking, spending time with family and friends and walking her dogs. She co-runs Hunter Romance Writers and is the organiser of several group writing ventures.
